29th Producers Guild of America Awards Nominations

Today the Producers Guild of America announced the nominations for their annual Awards and no doubt that from all guilds announcements these are the nominees most film pundits anxiously await as is directly related to the 10 possible Oscar nominees and of course, PGA winner frequently becomes Academy Best Film winner.

Before the announcement there were too-many speculations, predictions, guessing-games and crystal-ball visions.  But most expect Get Out, Lady Bird, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, Call Me by Your Name, The Shape of Water and Dunkirk are to be nominated.  Then the second group of probable nominees are The Florida Project, The Post, Darkest Hour, I Tonya and some even mention one film that could be a BIG push for Netflix if gets a PGA nomination: Mudbound.

Then reality struck.  The biggest positive surprise is Wonder Woman getting a nomination which undoubtedly opens a huge door for an Oscar nom.  There is no doubt that Molly's Game just upped its game in current awards season as seems critics overlooked film but industry is not forgetting about Aaron Sorkin directorial debut. Perhaps the biggest snub is Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, Phantom Thread, a film that possibly will end its run in current awards season; also surprising is the absence of Darkest Hour but believe film Oscar chances are more in the Best Actor category than in any other.

Then, for the first time there are 11 PGA nominees in top category, instead of the usual 10 as there was a tie in voting.  So if Oscar noms go up to 10 (which is still Best Film Oscar maximum nominations -read the rule again today as there are many industry articles claiming Oscar has only 5 nominations and it's not what the Academy says in its current rules and eligibility), then there will be at least one film out; but more realistically, top category at the Academy Awards usually gets around 8 nominations, therefore there are more films that could disappear and there are chances that at least one film not nominated by PGA could make it to Oscars nominations.  By-the-way today started the Oscar voting, so those Academy Members that follow industry news will get their usual doses of influence with all the buzz and fuzz around what the guilds do.
